ADHD and the Holidays: Cope ahead for Overwhelm
It’s the week before Christmas. If you and yours celebrate, this is likely a big week for you. How are you doing with managing your stress levels? If you need some ideas, here are three ideas to get you thinking-
Set realistic expectations with loved ones and friends.
If you are not able to attend three Christmas dinners- how can you set a boundary that honors your needs AND balances the relationship with these loved ones? If you can’t ride to an event with the group, can you advocate for meeting the group at the get-together location?
Simplify, simplify, simplify.
If you can pick up a tasty dish to share at a local restaurant or grocery store, maybe now is the time for “good enough”. If the idea of spending hours in the kitchen feels impossible- maybe focus on the main course and invite family to bring the side dishes, beverages and dessert. You don’t have to do it all.
Body Doubling
If you haven’t heard of body doubling, maybe now is the time to add the word to your vocabulary. This is a good time to invite friends over for a body doubling session. Sometimes the simple act of having someone in the room allows you to have the motivation to do the task. Consider making it a open house so friends can come over and co-work.
I am sending you all positive vibes and wishing you a happy holiday season. If you are feeling that you need more support, consider reaching out to schedule a free 15 minute consult to see if we are a good fit for therapy.
